I ett avsnitt av the MMA Hour ger Pride- och UFC-veteranen Renzo Gracie sin version av händelserna utanför nattklubben ”1 Oak” i New York, som ledde till att han arresterades.
”It was nothing much. In reality people made the thing become big” svarade Renzo Gracie (13-7 MMA) när intervjuaren Ariel Helwani frågade honom om incidenten.

”The [Distriktsåklagaren] saw me there, decided to call the press, make some drama. Said that we were doing a ”gang assault”. A gang assault is defined by three people beating up one individual and causing him serious injuries, which never happened.”
”I think now that they’ve watched the tapes, they realise that nothing happened but me taking they guy down and mounted him. And when I was going to start beating him up, he said to me ”Why are you doing this, I don’t know you. Why are you beating me up?”
”You have to understand one thing: I in my life, I promised that I would never hit someone who chickened out. And the guy chickened out. The guy threw in the towel, he asked to leave. I couldn’t hit him, I just stood up. And at the same time an amazing bouncer that I’ve [known for a long time] came up and asked ”why are you doing this?” And I said ”this guy has a mouth on him that does nothing but insult people”.
Renzo ska enligt honom själv då ha ursäktat sig och gått tillbaks till bilen han anlände i, vilket tydligen inte var nog för att avvärja fortsatt konflikt i situationen.
”This guy then stood up and called out all the other bouncers, which were about twenty and was telling them to attack us. So as we’re trying to make for the car the bouncers are coming after us, and we’re just holding our ground and walking back until the cops arrived. When the cops arrived he made it a scandal.”
Han tillade också att inga faktiska slag ska ha utdelats.
”Luckily nobody hit anybody. The whole time, we were grabbing each other, without kicking, without punching. The only one who took someone down was me. My altercation was only with this guy, because to everyone who came to the door, he was rude.”
Renzo Gracie driver sitt eget jiu jitsu gym i New York och har länge varit aktiv i sporten, likt många andra av den välkända Gracie familjen.
