The UFC has put together a very solid card for its event here in New Jersey, including a main card with three, possibly four fights that feature soon-to-be title contenders. Plus, there are four top-15 ranked fighters appearing in the prelims. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday.

EDDIE GORDON vs CHRIS DEMPSEY
Middleweights
Round 1
They touch at the center of the cage. Gordon with a hard right to start. They exchange jabs. Now combinations from both men.Gordon lands a hard left that got Dempsey’s attention. Dempsey pushing forward, now looking for the double-leg, but no go. Gordon turns him around in the clinch. Gordon fighting for a single leg with no success. They break. Trading in the center of the octagon. Now another clinch on the fence and a quick break. Solid pace to start. Overhand rights from both men, then Gordon lands a straight to the chin of Dempsey. Hard uppercut lands for Gordon and he stuffs a takedown attempt by Dempsey. Dempsey continues to press forward, but Gordon is landing the harder pops, including an uppercut to the chin that rocks Dempsey’s head back. Dempsey with some knees and body shots in the clinch. Hard knee lands for Gordon. Stiff right left combo from Gordon, then another right clangs off Dempsey’s cheek. Dempsey losing the fisticuffs but showing some chin. Dempsey the aggressor, but the round goes to Gordon for the precision and damage. 10-9.
Round 2
Jabs from Gordon. Dempsey taking risks to get inside. A clinch on the cage and Gordon defends. Matt Serra yelling instructions in Gordon’s corner. Both men land hard. Dempsey hurts Gordon and gets in for a high-crotch takedown, but Gordon turns it around and puts Dempsey on his back. Now in side control, isolating Dempsey’s right arm. Dempsey turns to his knees and is able to scramble up. Dempsey stalks and Gordon circles. Some good exchanges and they get back to the middle of the cage. Dempsey now with the takedown and Gordon’s back is to the fence. It ends there. Close round goes to Dempsey, 10-9.
Round 3
Dempsey going for broke here. He attacks and gets the clinch. Now he drops and looks for a guillotine, but Gordon breaks free and gets a seatbelt hold on Dempsey. They’re back to their feet. The clinching resumes, but they break. Both men taking deep breaths now. Gordon with a hard right but Dempsey wobbles Gordon with a left. They stand in the pocket and trade before Dempsey goes for the single. Now Gordon looking for a guillotine, but no. They clinch and break again. Dempsey seems to have more in the tank, but Gordon still landing and defending well. Gordon drops Dempsey to his butt and is now in his guard. They’re back to their feet. Dempsey trying hard for a double-leg against the fence. And he gets it. But Gordon’s back up quick. Dempsey drops him right back onto his back and gets side control. The round winds down and that last takedown may have won this fight for Chris Dempsey. He takes the round 10-9, and we score the fight 29-28 for Dempsey.

DIEGO BRANDAO vs JIMY HETTES
Featherweights
Round 1
Diego takes the center. Big body kick lands. But Hettes catches the next kick and sweeps Brandao. Diego back up and attacking. Now loking for the takedown. He lifts and dumps Hettes. NowBrandao has the back loking for a choke. Hettes not in a good place. Brandao momentarily went for the arm triangle. He’s in side control now. Hettes pulls guard. Hettes with a high guard. Diego looking for elbows and Hettes tries an omoplata. No luck but they’re back to their feet. Clinch. Hettes with some nice knees. Brandao warned for grabbing the fence. Another knee to the forehead of Brandao, but he gets the trip takedown and is now in Hettes guard. Some slicing elbows, but Hettes reverses and they scramble back to their feet. They’re back in the center. Trading punches now. Both men slow down. Hettes bleeding heavily from around the left ear. A 10-9 round for Brandao who surprised Hettes with some takedowns and grappling.
In between rounds the doctor stops the fight! Hettes cauliflower ear exploded, and that’s that. The crowd is not happy.

GEORGE SULLIVAN vs TIM MEANS
Welterweights
Round 1
Means calm. Sullivan bouncing and he throws an outside leg kick. Sullivan attacks but eats a knee. Sullivan with a nice straight right. Good exchanges, but Means off to somewhat of a slow start. Means moving forward and lands an elbow. Sullivan busy but not causing damage. He charges for a takedown and Means defends. Means hits the switch and starts throwing hard elbows in the clinch. They’re back in the center of the cage. Sullivan with more strikes thrown but Means looks to be winning the round with technique and range. Outside leg kick snaps off Sullivan’s thigh. Means slowly invading Sullivan’s range. Spinning elbow lands for Means at the bell. Close round. Sullivan may have stole it with activity, regardless of damage. 10-9 Sullivan.
Round 2
Means with a side kick that grazes. Now throwing double jabs. He’s connecting on George’s face. Sullivan having a hard time getting in close enough to cause any real damage. Means pushes him to the cage. Sullivan whiffs with a huge overhand right. Similar to the first round: Means stalking steadily; Sullivan throwing a lot but not hurting. Now Means attacks and lands with a very sharp shovel punch. And now a sharp left. Sullivan looks for the takedown, but Means tosses him onto his back. Looking for some ground and pound before moving into half guard is Means. As Sullivan gets up he eats a big knee. Sullivan attacking with variety, but it’s not yet paying off. Means with another front kick to the body. Means lands a nice left uppercut on the inside. He seems to be breaking Sullivan down now, but Sullivan lands a hard right. Means the aggressor against the fence. Means drops Sullivan with a hard standing elbow. Now more elbows on the ground, but Sullivan survives. Means pulling ahead. He takes a 10-9.
Round 3
Means throws a sharp kick to the calf. Then another. Sullivan looking a little sloppy. Means calm and collected. He lands a right hook. A nice left then right from Means. Another straight left lands. Means taking his time here. He trips Sullivan and takes the top before transitioning to side control. Means in control on the ground. Sullivan has little to offer from his back. Means with short elbows, biding his time. Sullivan trying to twist away, but Means is all over him. Not much damage being done, but Sullivan very frustrated here. Means looks for the arm triangle and that’s all she wrote! Sullivan taps. Excellent pacing and patience demonstrated by Mr. Means.

ALJAMAIN STERLING vs TAKEYA MIZUGAKI
Bantamweights
Round 1
Mizugaki takes the center of the cage. Sterling moving a lot. Sterling with a nice body kick and drives Mizu to the cage. Mizu spins him around standing and takes the back for a moment. They scramble. Sterling looking for a single-leg, but Takeya defending. Long clinch now. Sterling relentless with this takedown attempt. Knees from both on the inside now. Finally the ref separates them. Hard body kick again from Sterling. And a low leg kick, but Mizu with a solid left hand. Sterling bending over to duck punches. Might leave him open to an uppercut. Sterling drives in again for the single leg and he gets Mizu to the ground for just a moment. But Mizu scrambles up. And again… same thing. Now they’re clinched on the fence. Sterling with a spinner and a hard right to end the round. He stole it there. 10-9 Sterling in his debut.
Round 2
Mizu attacking, but Sterling gets the double-leg against the cage. Mizu back up. Hard knee from Sterling, returned by Mizu. Clinch on the fence here. Back to the center. Sterling more dynamic with his attack. Mizu with an uppercut, then stuffs the takedown attempt. Flying knee attempt from Mizu, who is looking to box primarily. Sterling with some front kick attempts. Another single-leg converted with a trip by Sterling. He’s looking to take the back against the cage. And he gets it. Sterling looking to transition to the mount, but he’s still got the back and this is not good for Mizu. Body lock by Sterling. Rabbit kicks to the inner thigh, perilously close to Mizu’s berries. Sterling controlling well. They roll over and over. Now rabbit kicks to the ribs by Sterling. Nice technique, and a strong round for the rookie. Another 10-9 goes to Sterling.
Round 3
Mizu needs a finish here. Sterling repeatedly dipping his head. If Mizu had kicks, that could be a problem. Mizu stuffs again but Sterling grabs a heel and drags Mizu to the ground against the fence. He takes Mizu’s back again, with plenty of time in the round. Mizu finally spins it around and is now in Sterling’s guard. But Sterling locks in an arm triangle from the bottom! It’s tight! Crazy! And Takeya has to tap. That may be a first in the UFC from the Serra Longo prospect.

GIAN VILLANTE vs COREY ANDERSON
Light Heavyweights
Round 1
They touch. Anderson showing quick jabs. Nice punch kick combo from Anderson. Gian looking for a heater. Then he lands a nice leg kick. They’re in the middle of the mat. More leg kicks from Villante. Corey having success with that lead left hook. Jab from Gian. He stuffs a shot from Anderson. Another heavy leg kick. Corey attacks with a heavy 5 punch combo and ends it with a kick. Nice work there. They trade jabs. No real damage from either side. Gian chopping with that low leg kick. Corey might have a sore leg. Now Villante lands a head kick! Anderson better start checking those kicks or he’s going to have a problem in the later part of the fight. Another vicious one to the calf. Pace slows. Corey with a hard body shot combo. Yet another one to the calf of Anderson. And another. This is brutal. But Anderson seems to be handling the leg punishment OK. Round ends and it has to go to Villante for those leg kicks. 10-9.
Round 2
Gian starts where he left off with a thunder kick to the knee. He goes high next, but Corey blocks it. They trade punches in close before Villante rips another three leg kicks. A fourth. Corey should be getting the message. Right hand lands for Anderson. He catches a kick now. Corey lands a hard right cross that gets Villantes attention. They circle in the middle and trade hooks. Not much working here for either man. Uppercut from Anderson and a left hook. Now a leg kick from Villante and another. And a third. Corey’s leg is getting buckled by these heavy muay thai kicks. Gian looking winded, and Corey is rattling off punch combos. Finally Corey checks one of the kicks. He throws a body kick of his own. Villante letting some punches slip through now. But again with two hard calf kicks. Corey attacking at the end of the round and throws in a flying knee. Closer round. Corey more active, earning a 10-9.
Round 3
Corey looking to check those kicks now. He throws a front kick of his own. They circle and trade. Gian with a hard overhand right. And Corey with a sharp jab. Another leg kick by Villante. And another spins Anderson half way around. Corey with some boxing, but not super effective. Spinning back fist misses. They’re going back and forth with the boxing. Body knee from Anderson and another flying knee attempt. Hard right lands for Anderson and a sharp jab. Villante coming in with low hands and paying for it. But he lands his own jab. Corey looking better on the feet here. Villante lands a left hook and misses with a hard overhand right. Another one staggers Anderson! He crumples against the cage and, though he’s on his feet he cannot defend! The ref steps in to end it! Wow! Huge win for Villante!

OVINCE SAINT PREUX vs PATRICK CUMMINS
Light Heavyweights
Round 1
OSP with his hands low to start. A left cross staggers Cummins. Front kick from OSP. And another. Cummins does not look comfortable but he catches a high kick and gets OSP to the ground momentarily. Another takedown attempt, but OSP uses the whizzer and they scramble. Cummins presses OSP to the cage. Nothing doing and they break. Knee to the body by OSP. Cummins looking to wrestle because the striking game is not looking promising. OSP a very big man, even in comparison to the rather large Patrick Cummins. OSP looking for that straight left. Spinning back kick from OSP, but Cummins immediately swarms for a takedown. OSP back up in a hurry. Nice straight right lands for Cummins. OSP attacking with haymakers. Cummins ducks under them. Hard left lands on Cummins mouth as he charges in. Now OSP looking for a takedown. But suddenly OSP drops Cummins with a left uppercut to the chin. Whoa! He swarms and lands about eight hammer fists to a semi-conscious Cummins before the ref stops it. Big knockout from a big man.

BENEIL DARIUSH vs JIM MILLER
Lightweights
Round 1
We start. Miller attacks, but Dariush returns with a hard leg kick. Miller stings Dariush with a right hand. Dariush with another hard left kick. They clinch for a moment. Dariush with a nice knee. Now Miller with some knees inside. Dariush looking for the single and Miller reverses with a kimura! Then Miller slaps on a triangle! He’s cranking Dariush’s arm as well. This is close! But Dariush escapes. Now Dariush on top looking for an arm triangle. Miller pulls full guard. Dariush into half guard. Rubber guard from Miller who throws an elbow from the bottom. Dariush escapes from Miller’s rubber guard position. Great round and very close. 10-9 to Dariush for the top position.
Round 2
Dariush with a long left punch to start. A flying knee lands to Miller’s body. They tie up against the fence. Miller wants the takedown and gets it. Dariush again looking for the head-arm choke, but Miller too savvy for that. A reversal by Miller and he pulls a guillotine! But Dariush escapes. Now Darisuh into mount. Impressive work here. Miller gives up his back. Dariush locks on a body triangle and we have half of the round left. Miller on his back again with Dariush in mount. Dariush really trying hard for that arm triangle. Telegraphing it too much. Elbows from the top and he’s on Miller’s back again. He’s looking for that rear naked choke but Miller defending. Dariush dominating on the ground. This is surprising. Miller gets to his feet with Dariush on his back. He does a flying somersault, but Dariush clings. Dominant round for Dariush. 10-9.
Round 3
Dariush has a bloody chin. Miller made need a finish. But Beneil looking strong her. He’s got Miller against the cage, and he drags Miller to the ground. Half-guard. Dariush showing great control on the ground. He flips over to side control. Now north-south. Miller getting rag-dolled here. A technical battle on the ground, and it ends up with Dariush in mount. He transfers to the back. Again Miller to his feet with Dariush on his back, and again Miller with the somersault slam. No luck. Dariush is like a leech. He’s looking for a choke, but Miller refusing to go quietly. It’s going to end with Dariush on the back. Miller tries one more slam, landing both of them on their heads. And the fight is over. Another 10-9 for the very impressive Beneil Dariush.

PAIGE VANZANT vs FELICE HERRIG
WOMEN’S STRAWWEIGHTS
ROUND 1
They meet in the middle and clinch. Both women throwing hard shots and knees. They clinch to the fence. PVZ with a hip toss. Now Herrig takes the back and flattens out Paige. Felice looking for a choke or an arm here. She’s controlling on the back. PVZ in a bad spot. A scramble and PVZ is now on top and hammering away. Back to the feet. They trade places against the cage. Tough fight so far. Now back to the center. Big knee from PVZ. Herrig with underhooks. They punch each other in close. Another judo toss by Paige. She’s on top and lands a hard shot or two. Pouring it on now. Now half-guard with Felice on her back. Paige surprisingly strong. Rubber guard from Herrig, and an upkick. Paige looks for an ankle lock at the end of the round. Nice work on both sides, but PVZ gets the 10-9.
Round 2
PVZ with a switch kick to start. She falls to the ground and Herrig attacks. Now they’re on the cage. Foot stomps from PVZ. Herrig drags her to the ground momentarily. They’re back up against the cage. Knees on both sides. Elbow inide from PVZ. They go to the ground with Felice on top, but Paige reverses! Herrig turns it over and they’re back to their feet again. Nice knee to the head from PVZ. Felice grabs a leg and takes her to the ground, but in the scramble Paige ends up on top in side control. Felice on her back again and Paige punching. Paige winning this fight on the ground. Felice looking for and armbar, but Paige yanks it out! That was close. They’re in north-south position. Paige with some very hard shots to end the round! Another strong round for the 21-year-old. 10-9 VanZant.
Round 3
Herrig needs a finish to win it. Body and leg kicks from PVZ. They clinch. Herrig not looking great. Paige with another takedown. Impressive. Herrig getting beat up. Banzant is relentless. Herrig trying to lock up a leg. VanZant with complete top control. Herrig is just trapped and she needs to make something happen quick here. Now Felice gets Paige’s back and is looking for a choke. But Paige spins it around. Great work. Paige with some heavy gnp and the ref is watching closely. Wow. Now she’s in side control. Dominant again. Elbows from the top. Herrig is being smothered. Herrig hapless here. Paige pounding away. This could be a 10-8 round. VanZant just showed that she is a true contender. Great round for the youngster. Let’s give her the 10-8 for a 30-26 victory.

CUB SWANSON vs MAX HOLLOWAY
Featherweights
Round 1
Hard body kick from Holloway. And then a head kick blocked. Slow start and the crowd is quiet. Cub lands a hard left in tight. Max looking for that head kick. Lots of tattoos in the cage right now. Capoeira kick from Cub. Max with a combo. Cub looking for an overhand left. Flying knee by Max. Both men cautious. No real damage at this point. Another left lands for Cub. Holloway unfased. Holloway with a head kick. Hard left jab for Cub. Max misses with a wild back kick. They trade hard at the end of the round! Did Cub slip or was he dropped? Either way, he’s back up in a hurry. Holloway may have taken that 10-9.
Round 2
Hard body kick again to start Max’s round. Cub attacking. Another hard body kick lands on Cub. And another. Max rips to the body with a boxing combo. He’s in and out and Cub is not offering much here. Nice movement by Holloway. They’re dancing in the center of the cage, but again not much doing. Inside leg kick from Cub. Knee from Max. It’s a bit of a chess match and they are neutralizing each other. Hard right for Cub. Overhand from Max lands with a snap. Now Max is clowning. Not a great idea against Mr. Swanson. Max with a nice combo. They trade jabs. Now theyre trading. Huge flying knee lands for Holloway. Head kick blocked by Cub. Hard left hurts Cub at the end of the round, and a knee. A spinning kick from Max ends it. He took the round in those final seconds. 10-9 Holloway.
Round 3
Spinning back kick lands to the body of Swanson. They clinch. Cub needs something big here. Holloway is chipping away at him. Hard left lands for Cub. Spinning head kick blocked by Holloway. Body shots traded. Hard body kick lands for Holloway and Cub drops to his knees. Holloway swarms. Holloway takes his back. He sinks in an arm triangle and Cub BARELY survives it. Now Holloway in side control. They’re back up. Max lands a hard left. And now he’s attacking and in control. Max locks in a guillotine. It’s very very tight and Cub is finally forced to tap. Another very very impressive performance on the night! Wow. Max looked damn good and seized the moment.

CHRIS CAMOZZI vs JACARE SOUZA
Middleweights
Round 1
Let’s see what Camozzi can do against the mega-favorite Jacare. Hard inside leg kick from Camozzi. Another one. Jacare stalking. Hard body kick and right hand from Souza. Camozzi moving well to start. He wings a head kick that misses. Body kick from Jacare returned with a leg kick from Camozzi. Jacare with the power double and Camozzi is on his back trying to control the notorious ground fighter. Jacare now in side control. This might be a short night if Camozzi can’t do something here. Jacare pops over and is hunting for an arm now. He gets it and cranks, Camozzi taps. As expected, sadly.

LUKE ROCKHOLD vs LYOTO MACHIDA
Middleweights
Round 1
Here we go. Rockhold takes the center of the cage. Machida dancing. Rockhold with a leg kick. Crowd chanting Machida. Machida circling to the left. He lands a hard left and a right. Rockhold misses a leg kick. Another hard left and right land for Machida. Machida with a hard left and slips. Rockhold on top looking for a guillotine. He doesn’t get it. Machida with elbows from the bottom. Now rockhold in mount. Machida shrimps to half guard. ROchold pounding from top. Machida resumes guard. Rockhold postures and is looking for a punch. Machida flips. Rockhold loking for his back. Machida covering up. Rockhold drags him to the ground, still looking to take the back. Machida defending. Machida again rolls to his knees. Rockhold not doing much damage, but controlling well. Machida struggling to his feet. Rockhold smothering. He’s got the back now. ROckhold is pounding away. Thirty seconds. Machida hanging on. Rockhold almost had a choke. But Machida will survive to fight another round. Impressive work by Rockhold. 10-9 to the Santa Cruz fighter.
Round 2
Machida needs to bounce back here. Leg kick from Machida. Body kick now. Rockhold stalking. Machida catches a kick. Body kick from Rockhold. Pace slowing. Both men cautious. Rockhold lands a hard right inside. Machida gets tossed to the ground and Rockhold is all over him. Not good for the Brazilian. Machida looking to roll out, but Rockhold dominant on top. Rockhold locks in the rearnaked choke and Machida has to tap. Nasty work there. Rockhold may be a champion in the making.
