Den tidigare UFC-mästaren i tungvikt Frank Mir (17-9) har skruvat igång ordkriget mot sin nästkommande motståndare i Todd Duffee (9-2) ordentligt. Mir säger att Duffees kommentarer gentemot honom har tänt en gnista hos Mir som han tänker använda för att bryta något hos Duffee med.
Den 15 juli i San Diego ska UFC Fight Night 71 avgöras. Kortets huvudmatch är ett tungviktsmöte mellan Todd Duffee och den tvåfaldige tungviktsmästaren i UFC, Frank Mir. De två herrarna har tidigare varit sparringpartners med varandra i Las Vegas och Mir tyckte inte om sättet som Duffee försökte ordna mötet på. ”As far as trying to garner interest and petition for a fight, I completely understand. Some of the things he said, obviously that irked me a little bit. One thing is petitioning for a fight, it’s another thing when you start throwing things. You fought, what, four times in five years, you’ve only fought one guy in the top-10, and that guy demolished you in 19 seconds. I think there’s still a certain relative perspective that should be kept”, säger Mir till MMAjunkie Radio.

Duffee var väldigt högljudd i sina försök att få till en match mot Mir och sade bland annat att Mir bara är ute efter att få betalt inuti oktagonen för att nämna en sak. Vad Mir inte verkar ha gillat är inte just sakerna Duffee sagt utan det faktum att han inte tagit ansvar för att ha sagt dem i efterhand: ”And I don’t like, and it’s kind of what he does, for somebody to do something that’s dickish, like me to slap you and then go, ‘but I’m not a dick.’ But wait a minute, you did a dick move. I don’t care what you say afterwards. For him to say, ‘Well, I’m trash talking, but I’m not really a trash talker.’ What? You can’t sit there and go, ‘I’m acting like a dick, but I’m not really a dick.’ It’s like, no, you’re a dick, and now you’re actually a coward, because you won’t even stand up for the fact that you’re a dick. At least be a real dick and embrace it”, säger Mir.

Mir vann sin senaste match mot Antonio ”Bigfoot” Silva i februari och lyckades därmed undvika fem raka förluster. Duffee har tävlat väldigt sällan sedan han slog igenom med en åtta sekunders-knock i sin UFC-debut år 2009. Han vann dock sin comeback mot Anthony Hamilton vid UFC 181 via knock i den första minuten. Trots att 29-åringen bara gått elva fighter i sin karriär så vill Mir se till att denna fight blir hans sista: ”It kind of brings you back to the fact of, I train to break bones and put people unconscious. At the end of the day, I know we have a referee in there and there’s a point system, but this is fighting. This is me trying to dismember you and trying to hurt you and trying to completely crush the person in front of me.
When Duffee says some of the things he’s said, it reminds me that I need to practice going for that armbar and adjust that position and hold there. Instead of thinking what the judges are going to think for this fight, I’ve been going in thinking I don’t really care what the judges say, about being on top or being in this position. I’m going for broke, and I want to make sure that this might be his last fight, that he’s unhealthy afterward”. Hårda ord från Mir som bland annat brutit såväl Tim Sylvias som Antonio ”Minotauro” Rodrigo Noguieras armar sedan tidigare i sin långa UFC-karriär.
