Under lördagen ägde eventet An Experience With Conor McGregor rum framför 5000 personer i EventCity i Manchester. Där deltog UFC:s lättviktsmästare Conor McGregor (21-3 MMA) i en timslång intervju med den respekterade MMA-journalisten Ariel Helwani, något som även sändes online via pay-per-view.
Även om flera ämnen behandlades, så lades mycket fokus på den eftertraktade boxningsmatchen mot obesegrade Floyd Mayweather (49-0 boxning). ”The Notorious” menade att det är matchen som han hoppas kunna boka in till sin comeback – och uppmanade Mayweather att boka in ett möte med honom i dagarna då han ska resa över till Las Vegas.
Vill ge fansen vad de önskar
Kort senare svarade ”Money” på irländarens uttalanden, då han närvarade under nattens boxningsgala och ställde upp på en intervju med Showtimes Jim Gray.
“I believe the fight could happen,” sa Mayweather. “Conor McGregor, like I said before, he’s a tough competitor. He proved throughout the years in the UFC that he can fight standing up. So we’ll just have to see what the future hold.”
Då efterfrågan på matchen, som enligt Mayweather skulle matchen gå i antingen 147 eller 150 pounds, är så pass stor hos fansen så menar han att det är dags att ge alla vad de vill ha.
“I truly believe the fans want this fight,” fortsatte han. “The fans have been asking for this fight. It’s all about entertainment. He’s very entertaining. He’s very outspoken, like myself. So let’s give the fans what they want to see.”
“With the Ali Act, I believe I can”
Den stora frågan är dock hur det hela ska arrangeras, då McGregor är kontrakterad av UFC. Irländaren menade dock att han kan ta en boxningsmatch utan att organisationen nödvändigtvis måste vara inblandade – även om han skulle föredra om alla kunde komma överens och samarbeta.
“With the Ali Act, I believe I can. Especially now that there’s offers on the table. But I think it’s smoother if we’re all involved. I think we’re all about good business. I’ve done great business with the UFC, with Dana (White), with everyone. I think it’s smoother if everyone just gets together and we get it involved. But again, everyone’s got to know their place,” sa McGregor till Helwani och fortsatte:
“Everyone’s got to know their place. There’s Mayweather Promotions, there’s the UFC, and now the newly formed McGregor Promotions, and we’re all in the mix. So that’s what I’m saying. Nobody is my boss. I know Floyd likes to say Dana (White) is my boss and this and he decides. Hell no. Nobody decides this. If they let people go fight jiu-jitsu tournaments, they can’t stop me going to fight a boxing fight. So obviously it’s smoother to do it all together, but look, everyone’s just got to know their place, and everyone does know their place. Low key, everyone knows their place, so we’ll figure it out.”
Vill ha matchen på Showtime
Mayweather är nog inte lika mån om att samarbeta med UFC dock, och föredrar istället en pay-per-view i samarbete med Showtime.
“Can we make this fight happen? Absolutely,” sa Mayweather. “That’s what everyone wants to see. And of course, Showtime is the biggest and the best in the business. So hopefully Showtime pay-per-view, we can make it happen.”
