Alistair Overeem intervjuades igår av sherdog.com om det efterlängtade mötet med Junior Dos Santos vid UFC on Fox 17 på lördag, och om hur han ser den gamle PRIDE FC-kollegan Fabricio Werdum, som han själv besegrade när han vann Strikeforcebältet i tungvikt i deras möte vid Strikeforce: Overeem vs Werdum den 18 juni, 2011, som en inspiration för hans fortsatta karriär.

På frågan om hur han ser på Junior Dos Santos som motståndare så svarar han:
”Junior is a very though opponent. He has experience and he is a former UFC heavyweight champion. He throws bombs, he is a very big hurdle, I see him as a test – if I beat him I think I am ready for the title, to get another crack at Werdum”.
Sherdog.com frågar Overeem vilka mål som han har kvar att uppnå i sporten innan han lägger av:
”For me personally, there is only one goal left, and that is the UFC-title. I have three belts, Strikeforce, Dream and K-1, but there is one missing, all my resources are dedicated to get the UFC-belt.”…”If I look at Werdum – he has had such a tremendous development. For me that’s an inspiration because he came out of nowhere, I still remember his first fight back in PRIDE FC back in 2003 – I never thought he would be the champion. That he became the champion is a big inspiration for me”.
På tal om Junior Dos Santos senaste match mot Stipe Miocic vid UFC on Fox 13: Dos Santos vs. Miocic den 13 december 2014, och det faktum att Overeem är känd för kunna knocka nästan vem som helst, samtidigt som Junior Dos Santos är känd för att vara väldigt svår att avsluta, säger Overeem:
”His last fight was tough, he beat Stipe on decision. I think that he did more damage but it was a tough fight, it was five rounds of warfare. That is not good for Juniors health. I mean, he is going to be fresh now, he has had a year to recover, and I expect him to be very hungry and motivated for this fight.”
“I am thinking two things. First, that’s not good for the brain and all the diseases that comes after his career. And second I think, I think we are going to have to take it easy on this guy, but that is the UFC, everybody has got a game plan, everybody is trained to avoid what you are going to do. It is not a secret what I am going to do: I am going to throw bombs. It’s hard to take people out in the UFC, because they are trained, they know what you are going to do”.
Overeem tycker att hans karriär har fått ett stort uppsving sedan han gått över till Jackson Wink MMA Academy. Han säger att atmosfären är positiv och att coachningen är väldigt kreativ och tekniskt inriktad, vilket passar honom utmärkt. Han säger att i Albuquerque så gör man i princip bara tre saker: man äter, tränar och sover, och trots att han har ett hus vid stranden i Florida som han saknar ibland, så måste jobbet komma i första hand.
Overeem avslutar med att kommentera Junior dos Santos tidigare uttalanden inför matchen om att en vinst över Overeem inte skulle betyda speciellt mycket för honom eller hans karrär:
”To be honest I dont really know what is going on in his head. So for him to say ‘Oh I dont care”, well, we will see about that this Saturday”.
