HETAST JUST NU
PART 4
Many people, people even named Anderson Silva agree with me on this next one, the best fighter in the world is BJ Penn. BJ got his black belt in 3 years. Do you know how crazy that is? Damien Maia got his in 5! However, that said, BJ Penn is from a different financial background than the rest of us, and I’m sure he took a few private classes along the way. No matter how he did it, when put to the test he passed. BJ was the first and perhaps only (not 100% on the only as of this posting) Non Brazilian to win the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world championships in the black belt division.
I don’t care if he bought his black belt from ebay. He would not have been able to win that tournament on luck. BJ is an odd duck. When he’s motivated it’s impossible to stop him. There have been two people that have ever accomplished this. One a (possibly) greased up GSP who is larger. A fight the first time he beat the crap out of GSP, a second fight that he allegedly greased and a third where GSP flat out beat him. And the other fights were both from the lighting fast stick and move tactics of the now champ Frankie Edgar. And before anyone gives me guff about my GSP remark, let me say this.
One of my instructors trained with Sean Sherk’s corner man. When Sherk fought GSP the first words out of his mouth when he went to the corner after round 1 were, “He’s slippery.” So, believe it or not, it’s been said by more than just BJ. BJ bloated up and fought Lyoto Machida. A guy who had already knocked Rich Franklin out earlier in his career. BJ beat the unstoppable Matt Hughes, actually making it look easy in the process. Losing to Matt only when he dislocated a rib. He is the only fighter (Chuck Liddell aside) that lives by the “Just Scrap” mentality. BJ flat out will fight anyone, at any weight class. If I saw him against Anderson Silva or Brock Lesnar next I would shrug once and say. “Goddamn BJ Penn man, he might be able to do it.” He fought Jon Fitch to a draw. And Jon Fitch is a motherf*cker.
He eats people’s souls. And BJ fought him, out of his weight class to a draw. I think there is no doubt about it that BJ Penn, should be considered the best fighter on the planet. If you disagree, (besides Anderson) talk to me when you find someone else who has fought in as many weight classes, beat people all the way up and all the way down those weight classes. Wins fights without training for them, and outside of gassing in that game of ping pong on TV has put up a a great fight with everyone, every time at any weight. When Anderson Silva says your the best in the world, I think that’s a good indicator that you might be one of the best in the world. BJ Penn can and does fight with the best now, and he would kill people who fought in the past. People like BJ are why people like Royce got bumped off this list. You can’t outbox him, you can’t out wrestle him and you can’t out grapple him. BJ Penn is the only person that beats BJ Penn. There are two people who can beat BJ. One is bigger and one moves a lot. But neither of those guys can beat BJ Penn all the time.
I mentioned him earlier, and now I have to mention him again. Mr. George Rush St.Pierre. Easily the toughest Canadian walking the planet. Before him we had Gary Goodridge and that was the list. GSP has matured as a fighter and changed in the process. Whether you think that is good or bad is up to you. The early fights he fought to finish as quick as possible. His first fight in the UFC was a blitzkrieg that had Jay Herion getting slapped silly and flopping around like a fish out of water. His fights after that were equally wonderful. GSP was thrown to the sharks with Matt Hughes, he lost the first time. When he tapped to Matt Hughes in their first fight I think Matt Hughes went home and thanked Jesus/Allah/Buddha/Terminator whoever that he won, he had to know if they meet again it might go different, (it did, Matt got kicked in the junk 2 times) GSP not only wins, he wins in slow punishing convincing fashion.
Rarely if ever taking real damage and rarely if ever losing a round. It’s true he is not fighting with win NOW mentality, but if the chance presents itself he certainly goes after it. With the competition he is up against, it’s extremely hard to just finish people. If Dan Hardy were not Dan Hardy 98% of people on earth would have tapped in that fight, if you think GSP is boring name one other person that can consistently put away people like Jon Fitch, Josh Koshcheck, Thiago Alves, Matt Hughes, BJ Penn in the first round. No one would be able to do it, so to get mad that GSP didn’t do it is silly. As I said earlier, Jon Fitch is a motherf*cker. He chews people up and spits them out and GSP went out there and punched the snot out of him. Shut down every aspect of his game. Out hustled him, out worked him, top to bottom beat him.
Not being able to finish Jon Fitch is not a knock against anyone. Because as of yet, besides knee KO early in his career no one in the division has been capable of stopping him. The thing that is incredible about GSP is that he beats the best guys at their own game. He beats wrestler’s at wrestling, he out strikes strikers. He mixed it up with Thiago Alves and put so much pressure on him that Thiago didn’t want to throw punches of kicks for fear of being taken down, and didn’t want to shot a take down for fear of being punched of kicked. How tough are you when you make excellent kick boxers afraid to kick box. It seems that of all the MMA fighters, GSP has his life and career in order. Having those things in check should ensure that he stays on top for a long time, your best and possibly only chance to catch him is on an off night when his family is falling apart and you just swing for the fences the way Matt Serra did.
Outside of that, he trains to hard, is learning from to many people. And devotes to much of his life to ever get caught outside of a winging hail mary punch. If he does lose, it’s because he moves up in weight solely because he is so dominate where he’s at. Considering he doesn’t cut that much weight, going up is more for the fans than it is for him. If he goes up in weight, he will do great. But he’s dealing with people who will throw harder punches, even when blocked they still jar you. He has shown heart and ability to take the fight anywhere at anytime. If he goes up, we can only hope he does so one fight at a time and doesn’t just get stuck fighting Anderson Silva first time out.
He shouldn’t have to go up or down, he’s just so god damn good that he won’t lose or even come close to losing until he does go up or down. GSP just made Jake Shields look like a regular fighter, Jake Shields had just walked out of the cage from beating Dan Henderson. Think about that for a second. GSP beat a guy, that beat a guy that beat Fedor. Since his winning ways are not as impressive as people would like to see they trash him. But he is going after fights, he is doing more than enough to win them and he is shutting people down in every aspect. Before you ask, no I don’t believe Nick Diaz had his number. I think Nick will bloody him and push him, but GSP is a big strong athletic guy.
Bloodied nose might happen, near gogoplata’s and such could happen. But in the end GSP just will keep pushing and pushing until the fight swings into his favor. GSP could easily dismantle and has dismantled everyone in his division. You’d be hard pressed to find another person that is the best fighter on the planet.
