Rousimar Palhares var den enda som vann under nattens UFC Fight Night 29 via en submission. Efter bara 31 sekunder så hade domaren brutit matchen efter att hans motståndare Mike Pierce vrålat och klappat frenetiskt. För prestationen så skulle Palhares också ha vunnit denna ”Submission of the Night”-bonus, men UFC håller nu tillbaka denna på grund av en utredning om osportsligt beteende från idrottskommissionen.
”Right now we are not awarding a submission of the night,” säger Marshall Zelaznik, UFCs direktör för internationell utveckling, på presskonferensen efter galan. ”Obviously Toquinho had the submission. But the comission is investigation the length of time he held that submission. So we are pending that investigation, we are not actually issuing a submission of the night bonus.”
För Palhares är detta dock inte första gången han hamnar i trubbel för en submission-vinst. Han blev bland annat avstängd i 90 dagar efter UFC 111, då han inte släppte ett benlås i tid. I slutändan fick den dåvarande motståndaren Tomasz Drwal aldrig några bestående men efter händelsen, men detta är ändå lätt hänt på dessa typer av lås. Så i detta fall tar UFC det säkra före det osäkra.
”Obviously there has been a bit of a history with Toquinho and he have held some of the submissions in the pasts. He have had some controversial issues surrounding some of these submissions. Dana reacted very strongly to it. A lot of the executives in the company and the commission reacted strongly to it. So we decided just that in the betterment of judgment, to just withhold any judgment at all. I suppose there is a chance if the commission comes back with a favorable finding we can reevaluate whether a reward is given. But right now we are not making a commitment to it.”
UFC:s VD Dana White menar också direkt efter galan att Palhares kan bli bestraffad hårdare än endast en förlorad vinstbonus. Men detta beslut kommer att få vänta tills efter att idrottskommissionen i Brasilien har avslutat sin undersökning.
