Det ser ut som att UFCs nyaste regerande mästare behöver göra om karriärens största bedrift, enligt ledningen.
Trots en dominant seger i sitt livs största match ser det ut som att TJ Dillashaw (10-2) kommer behöva möta den forna mästaren Renan ”The Baron” Barao (32-2) igen.
Enligt UFCs VD Dana White är det den mest rationella matchningen i nuläget. Detta trots att Raphael Assuncao (22-4), som tidigare besegrat just Dillashaw, var bokad som den ursprungliga motståndaren till Barao på UFC 173, innan en skada tvingade honom att dra sig ur matchen och ersättas av Dillashaw.
Många trodde därför att den nya mästaren skulle ta sig an Assuncao i ett returmöte om titeln. White tycker uppenbart annorlunda:
“[Dillashaw’s next fight] probably will be the Barao rematch,” sa VD:en till reportrar inför fredagens invägningar inför nattens gala, UFC 174.
“Tell me if I’m wrong. I think we sat there and we started looking through the list of guys to fight T.J., and there is a list of guys, which is a great thing, but how do you not give it to Barao, the guy who was undefeated all those years? I agree he got a five-round ass-whooping and got finished, but how does it make sense to not give him the rematch? And who doesn’t want to see it?”
”When you watch that fight last time, people were losing their minds because nobody saw that coming. They go in there and put on an unbelievable war. Is that not what you want to see again?”
Med anledning av hur ofta returmatcher tenderar att hända i titelsammanhang, blev White tillfrågad om han ansåg att det var ett för ofta förekommande fenomen att se samma tävlanden göra upp om en och samma titel. Svaret kom, inte helt oförväntat, i form av en boxnings-anekdot:
“How about (Manny) Pacquiao and (Juan Manuel) Marquez are going to fight for fifth fucking time, and you think we do too many rematches?”
“I think if you look at a fight like Barao and Dillashaw, the guy went undefeated for 10 years and lost one fight. I want to see that fight again. [Losing again] puts Barao in a really bad spot, but then Barao gets in line and continues to fight and we see where it goes from there.”
Trots vad som kan tyckas vara en något repetitiv inställning till matcher angående Bantamviktstiteln försäkrade White att fansen kommer få se alla matcher de kan tänkas hungra efter. Däribland räknas även ett potentiellt möte mellan Dillashaw och träningskamraten Uriah ”The California Kid” Faber (30-7), tydligen.
“They’ll fight each other tomorrow. Trust me. That fight is one of the other ones that could happen too.”
“Imagine we do the Barao fight and it sets up all these fights. We’ve got Dominick Cruz in there, as well. Guess what: Everything we’re saying is a home run.”
Av någon anledning har Alex ”Bruce Leeroy” Caceres (10-5-1) inte nämnts som en framtida titelutmanare än, trots att han gått obesegrad ur sina fem senaste matcher.
