Efter att ha besegrat Josh Barnett under lördagsnattens möte, är Ben Rothwell närmre en titelmatch i tungviktsklassen, än någonsin tidigare. Högs upp på hans prioritetslista är dock att krossa hela divisionen, titelmatch eller inte.
Då tungviktsmästaren Fabricio Werdum just nu är skadedrabbad, så kan Ben Rothwells titelchans vara en bit bort, trots helgens seger mot Josh Barnett och en skadedrabbad Cain Velasquez, som är först i kön mot en titelmatch. Det är dock inget som stör Rothwell just nu, berättade han efter mötet för FOX Sports. Snarare än att ta titeln i tungvikt är han mer intresserad av att krossa samtliga motståndare inom tungviktsklassen.
”I’d like to see what the offer is. They don’t make decisions tonight and they’ll look at kind of what the situation is and I don’t know, do they remake the former champ and champ, do they do that fight still? That’s going to leave me and Stipe Miocic I believe. If they want to move things around and they’re ready to put me in, I’ll go in and I’ll crush Fabricio Werdum and I’ll take his belt. The bottom line is I think the belt’s going to come secondary because my No. 1 priority is laying waste to this entire division. Tonight wasn’t about dancing or laughing, it was about making a statement. I made it tonight.”
Trots att Rothwell gick in i oktagonen med tre raka segrar inför motet med Barnett, betraktades han som fightern i underläge av de två. Efter den, för vissa, oväntade segern är Rothwell nu övertygad om att ingen kan förbise hans förmåga längre.

”I’ve been doing this for a long time and I’m all about paying your dues and I feel like I’ll be surprised if I get overlooked now,” Rothwell said. ”Because now I feel I’ve paid some dues. Now I’ve shown the world what I can do.”
Tidigare i karriären har Rothwell dragit på sig förluster mot ett flertal av de fighters som han nu kämpar för att få möta. Hittills har dock ingen nappat. Men efter vinsten mot Barnett, är Rothwell positiv och planerar att göra ett till försök att få några returmatcher. Han anser att varje person i divisionen är ännu ett steg mot storhet och målet är som sagt att krossa samtliga fighters, men självklart även att ta bältet under tiden också – när möjligheten uppstår.
”I’ve been calling out Andrei Arlovski and Cain Velasquez, I’m going to say it one more time — I’m here to lay waste to the entire division. That’s every guy ranked in front of me. I put a target on them. If they’re going to stand in my way from the belt, then unfortunately for them I’m going to crush them. That’s what I’m here to do.”
