MMAnytt (MN): Dear Anderson, Thank you so much for taking your time answering our questions. Several readers on MMAnytt.se want to know what you eat while training for a fight.
Anderson Silva (AS): I drink no alcohol, eat maybe 3000 calories a day and don’t measure stuff too much. I don’t eat candy! As you all know I worked at MacDonald’s once and I still like Big Mac.
MN: Why do you dance around sometimes when you fight? As last with the fight against Forrest Griffin. Is it a way to stress your opponents and winning the mental game?
AS: I dance well! Seriously I am from Brazil what do you expect?
MN: Except Lyoto are there any other fighters you don’t want to face?
AS: Yes. I will never fight The Nogueira’s, Lyoto Machida as you mentioned, Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons, Ricardo Arona, Pedro Rizzo and Paulo Filho.
MN: If you never had started doing martial arts during your youth, what do you think you would do today?
AS: I was raised by my aunt and uncle and I was taught to have a good moral. My older brothers were my heroes and making me want to work as a cop so I probably would have been one today.
MN: What went through your head when you realized you lost to Ryo Chonan in a very spectacular way and especially after you had been so dominant during the match? Please tell us about that match.
AS: When I look at that fight now I don’t want to take nothing away from Ryo. I fought that fight injured; I had a broken ankle, I thought I was winning the fight, and he pulled something out of his hat like a magician, a trick, I was not expecting his move and could not defend it. I believe I learned a great lot of that loss. Every loss you should learn something and also every win. I like to look at those matches back then because I realize how much I have evolved! I stay alert and look into what is new in BJJ and other sports. I also watch old tapes.
MN: How does a normal training day or week look like?
AS: 4 times a week I have 2 hour sessions with strength training. I like to do a lot of sets. About 2 days every week I spar, some do it too much and that is not good. I train fighting 5 days a week. But of course it depends upon my health, if I am training for a fight or what. But that’s a normal week. I also train my reflexes with a couple of drills when my friend throw balls at me and I move away and stuff like that. I also help my friends and as people know I imitate well so I get to imitate fighters a lot. Doing imitation I sometimes learn why someone like a certain style or a certain move. Recently I have helped Minotauro and been training with Andre Galvao for the BJJ world championship but also of course others. Training and fighting is my life. I train like there is no tomorrow. On my level you need to keep training and evolving all the time. I train with my friends and we all help each other out.
MN: Which is the toughest fight you have fought and why?
AS: A very hard question to answer as many fights have been tough in different ways. In UFC I have had the toughest fights but I will never forget the fight against Sakurai as it was my first world title and it was really tough! I worked other jobs at that time and he had fought 20 times with no loss. I also want to mention Rich Franklin. It was an honor to fight Rich Franklin! I cannot explain how I felt fighting him and I still feel that he and I are the two best fighters in 185.
MN: What are your plans after your MMA career/maybe boxing career? Acting in movies? Trainer?
AS: I don’t know but I like to act and I like stand up. Trainer, I don’t know. I will probably help friends. Thank you for all your questions and your support! I remember 1994 when Sweden met Brazil two times in the world cup. A very good cup.
