Bellators lättviktmästare Eddie Alvarez (25-3) är fortfarande under kontrakt med organisationen, men enligt Bellators nya VD, Scott Coker, pågår förhandlingar.
“They’re talking about a couple of different options,” sa Coker till MMAjunkie. “Right now, that’s where it is.”
När frågad om att specificera vad förhandlingarna berörde svarade Coker, “I don’t want to speculate as to what’s going to happen. But I know that they’re talking.”
Alvarez har vunnit tio av sina elva senaste matcher och sist besegrade han Michael Chandler (12-2) under Bellator 106.
Efter att rykten om att Alvarez skulle möta Donald Cerrone (24-6) under UFC 178 den 27:e september, gjorde Coker sitt första uttalande om Bellator relaterade nyheter efter att ha tagit över för Bjorn Rebney, två månader sedan.
Detta var vad Coker hade att säga till The MMA Hour, om situationen;
”Eddie is a great kid. I sat down with him and basically he told me all of the challenges he had with the past regime. And I totally got it. He is a great kid, great fighter and he definitely has a bad taste in his mouth on a lot of different levels. When he told me what happened, I told him, ’I don’t blame you, I totally understand.’ Where it’s at today is, you know, Eddie is still a fighter under contract with Bellator. I know that lawyers are involved and that is something that happened way before I came in. So, right now, I don’t have an update for you. At the end of the day, a guy like Eddie, if he comes here, that’s great. But on the other hand, if we have to rely on one athlete to make or break a company, we’re not going to focus on that either. I wish I had more to discuss about Eddie, but when lawyers are involved, you get two lawyers in a room, it just takes a lot of time to get stuff done.”
”I think there are a lot of things at play because he knows we’re intelligent property. It’s not just one persons decision, it’s going to be a collective decision. Like I said, I wish I had an answer for you. There are other people involved and at this point lawyers are talking to lawyers and that’s where it’s at.”
”Cowboy” har sedan ryktena blivit bokad för att möta Bobby Green (23-5) på UFC 178. Alvarez har tidigare försökt bryta från sitt Bellator kontrakt, men kom aldrig loss. Nu när Coker har tagit över var det flera fans som trodde att Alvarez snart skulle dyka upp i UFC. Något som är möjligt längre fram, men just nu är han bunden till Bellator.
Coker avslutade sitt uttalande med att säga att de skulle ha ett beslut klart till slutet på veckan för Bellator 2.0 ”doesn’t waste time”.
