”Pure bullshit,” var vad han uttryckte om Bellators motto, Patricio ”Pitbull” anser att han borde ha fått en titelchans, inte Pat Curran.
Det blev igår klart att Bellator bokat ett tredje möte mellan fjäderviktsmästaren Daniel Straus och den forne mästaren Pat Curran. När organisationen använde sin klausul sim tillät titelmatcher utan att den ena fightern tagit sig genom turneringen bröt de inte enbart mot deras motto ”Where title shots are earned, not given”, Curran trängde sig även framför Patricio ”Pitbull” Friere (21-2), som väntade på att få sin titelchans.
”That whole ‘where the title shots are earned, not given’ is pure bulls–t now. That doesn’t exist anymore,” sa Freire till MMA Fighting. ”Bellator is eating its own words. They didn’t respect my wins in the tournament.”
”Pitbull” knockade Diego Nunes i semifinalen av fjäderviktsturneringen, besegrade sedan Fabricio Guerreiro via domslut, och vann sedan turneringen efter att ha slagit ut Justin Wilcox i den första ronden.
Freire har tidigare utmanat Curran om titeln, på Bellator 85, där brassen ”Pitbull” förlorade ett delat domslut efter fem jämna ronder. Att Curran fick en titelmatch direkt efter att ha förlorat via ett tydligt enhälligt domslut gör faktumet att han trängt sig i kön ännu värre för Freire.
”I had a close fight against Curran last January. His win wasn’t clear, it was a close split decision, and I didn’t have another shot at the title,” sa Freire. ”They made me go back to the tournament, and I would only fight for the title again if I won the tournament.
”I went back to the tournament and beat up everybody. I respect everybody, but I beat them all convincingly. But when I earned my shot at the title, they give Curran another one. They must be kidding me.”
Detaljer kring när Freire får sin titelchans lär inte annonseras förrän efter Straus vs Curran III ägt rum, den 14:e mars i Indiana. Freire hoppas säkerligen på att matchen inte slutar i ett kontroversiellt domslut.
